Purpose & Opportunity.
Malawi is located in Africa’s southern region with an estimated population of 20 million. Malawi continues to have high poverty rates reaching 52% in 2018. Although multidimensional child poverty has declined from 63% in 2012/13 to 60.5% in 2016/17, most children in Malawi still suffer from multiple and overlapping deprivations (UNICEF, 2018).
TeamUp operates its activities in Mitongwe, a rural community consisting of 17 villages and more than 2,400 children. About 70% of children who live in rural areas are multidimensionally poor compared to 25% in urban areas (UNICEF, 2018).
Children in the Mitongwe area do not have the opportunity to play sports with coaches and have to start earning money for the family at a very young age. Many of them fall into drug or alcohol abuse at a very young age because there is no hope for a different future. TeamUp partners with Stand As One Ministry, who are providing food, education and life skills to children of all ages from a number of villages and communities.
Together We Assist
Sport programs.
TeamUp runs sports programs for children and youth that are carried out by its agent Stand As One Ministry with ongoing community development projects, and to play a specific role in providing opportunities for kids to belong and participate in physical activities coinciding with educational, nutrition and community programs.
Community support.
TeamUp trains local leaders to provide a sport component to these local outreach and development programs. This occurs through regular sport activities partnered with feeding programs. TeamUp provides sporting resources, equipment and often sports clothing in order to adequately resource our local partners so children have opportunities to engage in sporting and physical activities.
Training leaders.
TeamUp assists with leadership and facilitator training by regular communication and training meetings with leaders from the various local communities we are working with. TeamUp creates training content and trains volunteer coaches through webinars. Where possible, TeamUp staff visits the sports programs on an annual basis bringing volunteers to run sports clinics, do community work projects, and train leaders in person.
