Impact Story
Creating Fields of Belonging in Peru
Carlos Pino is the National Sports Coordinator for TeamUp Peru. He is as passionate about sport as just about anybody you will meet. However, when it comes down to it, he sees the relationship building quality of sport as its most important trait – far more so than any of its typical characteristics.
He has seen boys’ and girls’ teams from Yurimaguas’s Generación de Campeones (Generation of Champions) provide an avenue for youth who were at one time susceptible to gang activity and substance abuse to find healthy community instead.
Inspired by this vision, Carlos and TeamUp are now working hand in hand with local authorities in both Yurimaguas and Tarapoto to facilitate the kind of infrastructure which will allow even more children to experience the life-changing effects of participating in organized sport. In other words, they are building the fields where the next generation of young Peruvian athletes will discover a sense of belonging for the first time in their lives.
“This is the beginning,” as Carlos explains, “of a big dream we have in our hearts to impact the community here in Yurimaguas and Tarapoto.”
